Canowindra has led the way when it comes to
Organic farming and viticulture. Sam Statham from Rosnay organic Farm was named
in 2012 as "The inaugural Organic farming pioneer of the year". More
sustainable farms not only keep their products green, but they also produce
high-quality food and wines. The Rosnay Farm came from a long tradition of
grape-growing and no-chemical farming from the French Beaujolais, and Rosnay
wines are now recognized and hailed as a premiere organic winery and farm in
Australia.
Established by Richard and Florence Statham in
1995, Rosnay Farm is a 40-hectare patch of land southwest of Canowindra. Former
wool and cattle producers in Barraba, New South Wales, the Stathams moved to
southeast Australia in pursuit of a site for a new vineyard and olive farm.
They settled near Orange, in the Cowra wine region, and continued their culture
of growing grapes and producing Rosnay wines in an environmentally friendly
way.
Florence’s family has been cultivating vines in
France, with her mother Dolly raising her to become a traditional vine grower.
Meanwhile, Richard’s father was a conservationist and avid composter who had
sources and references on bio-dynamics. Together, the Stathams incorporated
their parents’ practices into modern organic farming.
The first vines were planted in 1997 and have since been organic. Rosnay wines are produced from wines planted on an assortment of soil types on specific locations in the vineyard. With grape varieties matched to appropriate soil types. Rosnay Farm has the standard variation of reds and whites as their signature wines. The Shiraz is harvested from the hilltop area, where the roots are able to dig deep into the bedrock soil. The Semillon is planted in sandier soils to control the flavor, while the Merlot and Chardonnay are planted in red soil.
